Giving Back

December 18, 2015 | Steve Hasbrooke

There is an old adage that “it is better to give than to receive,” and this is the perfect season to give some special attention and thought to those words. Many of us will spend time during the next couple of weeks both giving and receiving gifts from friends and family, and what a wonderful tradition this has become. But I think the true gifts we receive are the feelings of graciousness, gratitude and personal growth, coupled with the extraordinary interpersonal experiences we can have when we connect on a deeper level with those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

  • Helping those in need and those who may not be as fortunate as you are can make all the difference in someone else’s life. You never know exactly how your contributions may change the life of another person. To me, that is very exciting… the ability to touch someone’s life in an impactful and meaningful way that you may never actually see or fully comprehend.
  • Doing good for your community. Every community, no matter how big or how small, no matter how rich or how poor, can always benefit from a little loving attention, whether it’s given to the residents of the community or to the infrastructure. Find ways to get plugged in: volunteering at a senior citizen center or hospital, reading to children at a local library, or doing something to help beautify the community, like removing graffiti or picking up trash at your local park.
  • By volunteering, you WILL learn something. Not only are you likely to learn something about yourself, but you will gain new perspective in seeing those who are less fortunate not just getting by, but often times thriving under very challenging circumstances.
  • Volunteering introduces you to new and sometimes challenging scenarios that will stretch you as a person.

Mission Fed gives back to our community in numerous ways, always on behalf of our membership. As a local business that cares about the people and programs in San Diego County, we know it’s the right thing to do. Here are just a few examples:

  • Rady Children’s Hospital Holiday of Miracles
  • The Living Coast Discovery Center
  • The Mission Fed Shop at Junior Achievement’s JA BizTown
  • City of Hope
  • San Diego Zoo and Safari Park

During the holiday season and throughout the year, I like to think of these inspiring words: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” —Mahatma Gandhi

Wishing you and yours Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year!
