Mission Federal Credit Union is proud to once again support the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. September is Hunger Awareness Month, and taking part in this important program is an opportunity to help raise awareness of the impact of childhood hunger, while also raising funds to help keep kids fed in San Diego County. We invite our Mission Fed members, and other members of the community, to join us in giving back through this program and helping us provide food to children in need.

How the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program helps

The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program provides weekend food packages to chronically hungry elementary school students. Many children from low-income households are at risk of going hungry over the weekend when free or discounted school meals aren’t available. The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, available at 51 elementary schools in 14 school districts in San Diego County, currently feeds 2,600 students each week. While food bank programs can be of a sensitive nature for families and children, this program avoids the stigma that might be attached to taking part in the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program by discreetly inviting children out of class on Friday afternoons to distribute the bags of food to students. The nutritious food items are packaged so that the food is placed into backpacks, where it goes unnoticed by other students. The program has already reached a great number of students in San Diego County, but with your help and support, we can reach even more.

How you can help Mission Fed fight childhood hunger

Mission Fed believes in the power of giving back to our community and the success of our community and our members is our bottom line. Throughout the month of September, Mission Fed will have red backpacks on display at each of our branches to promote our participation in the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. We’re passionate about fighting childhood hunger and helping keep local students’ bellies filled all weekend long. Join us! Visit any Mission Fed branch and donate $5 to support the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program to provide a backpack filled with food to a local child in need. As a thank you for your donation, you’ll receive a green apple lapel pin to help show your support for the program and raise awareness of child hunger.
