December is the season of giving

December 12, 2014 | Mission Fed

Over my 18 years working for financial institutions, I have met with countless nonprofit organizations. The first thing I ask a nonprofit organization when I meet with them is, what do you need? Here are some of the answers I’ve received:

  • Cash to purchase supplies
  • Volunteers to help serve food during the holidays to the homeless
  • Warm bodies to hold newborn babies
  • Radio spots to promote an event
  • Presents for children who have never received gifts during the holidays
  • Used clothes

We all appreciate presents wrapped with beautiful bows but, as you can gather from this list, there are so many ways to give gifts that will impact our community this holiday season. Here are a few ways to think outside the (gift) box:

Give the Gift of Time

Time is just as valuable as money, and I make a point to volunteer my time (and my family’s) all year, especially during the holidays. You can give time by volunteering at local organizations such as a shelter or Food Bank. For a list of local nonprofits in San Diego, visit the latest list provided by the San Diego Union-Tribune Gift Giving Guide.

Give the Gift of Treasure

When time isn’t on your side, know that you can still give a monetary gift to so many deserving charities. Seeing Salvation Army volunteers ringing their bells and standing with their Red Kettles reminds me to treasure the spirit of the season and give what I can.

Give the Gift of Talent

If you have a talent or are skilled in a craft, you can share your talent with other organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. They always need skilled professionals to help rebuild homes all over the country.

The key, really, is finding what you’re passionate about and discovering ways where your passion benefits others. Take my love for the gift of gab—I love talking with other people, and just this past Wednesday and Thursday, I answered phones for the Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego Holiday of Miracles Radiothon. Having the chance to talk on the phone with donors and being surrounded by other volunteers reminded me how important it is to just take a moment, step back and appreciate the generosity that we all have within us, and can carry into 2015. Plus, there’s still time to donate! Visit our Holiday of Miracles page and find out how you can make a donation. You can also visit our Events page to see where we’ll be throughout the year.

You don’t have to give a lot to make a big difference in someone’s life. Thank you, and Happy Holidays!
